Dr. Paul Khurana, a Plant Virologist, started his career as Junior Scientist at Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore in 1970. Later he joined Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla in 1973 and worked there upto November, 2004. He served CPRI as Director (Jan., 2002 to Nov., 2004) before joining as Vice-Chancellor at Rani Durgavati University, Jabalpur. Dr. Paul Khurana worked throughout his research career on potato viruses, their detection, transmission and control. He and his team standardized the use of ELISA and ISEM for detection of potato viruses, isolated/cloned PVY/PLRV-CP genes and developed tobacco /potato transgenics with PVY-CP gene. He also developed simple and effective laboratory techniques for screening of resistance to viruses and aphids in potato plants. Dr. Paul Khurana is a fellow of several professional bodies including National Academy of Agricultural Sciences and also National Academy of Biological Sciences, Chennai, India. He has over 130 research publications, besides several books, many bulletins to his credit. In recognition of his research contributions, he has been honored by several awards, which include Dr. S. Ramanujam Memorial Award (2003) and Ch. Devi Lal outstanding AICRP Award of ICAR, New Delhi (2005) to All India Coordinated Research Project Potato which was led by him as the Project Coordinator for 10 years (1994-2004).
