Dr. Singh, an internationally reputed plant virologist, was the first to demonstrate transmission of spindle tuber disease of potato through the pollens and true potato seeds (TPS). In 1971, he demonstrated the low-molecular weight nature of Potato Spindle Tuber “Virus” which with simultaneous findings by scientists in USA, culminated in the discovery of ‘viroid’ as a new type of disease causing agent. He has also developed/modified several serological and nucleic acid based methods for the detection of potato viruses and viroids. Dr. Singh’s achievements have been recognized trough several awards including Outstanding Service Award by the New Brunswick Seed Potato Grower’s Association (1990), the PVYN Research Leadership Award (1991), the PVYN Eradication Leadership Award (1993), and Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canadian Confederation by the Government of Canada (1994). He has published over 220 research papers, book chapters and popular articles so far, and co-edited 5 books.
